Most families who reached out this year wanted clear answers on cost, eligibility, and which live session to join. Families across the United States can register for free virtual family therapy and live online support through The Family Recovery Foundation. This free virtual family therapy FAQ covers the questions raised most often, from who can attend and what each meeting covers to how registration works and where urgent help belongs.

Most questions lead to three decisions. Families need to know if they qualify, which live session fits, and whether the situation requires treatment or emergency care. The family programming hub is the main place to review current programs. Meeting times and registration routes also appear on the meetings and Get Help pages.

What the free virtual family therapy FAQ covers about services

You can use free virtual family therapy, live online support groups, 1-on-1 family coaching, and family education programs. Experienced facilitators and certified counselors lead the live sessions. No insurance is required for the free programs.

Each format has a different purpose. Fix Your Family teaches communication, boundary setting, and conflict resolution. The Family Room gives relatives an open-format support circle where they can share experiences and ask questions. Coaching pairs your family with a certified counselor by appointment to build a recovery plan that fits your situation.

Registered families can also join a private messaging group with the Clinical Director and trained peer support team. That group is available 24/7 for ongoing guidance. It is not an emergency service.

Nationwide access for families

Parents, spouses, siblings, and other loved ones can register from anywhere in the United States for free virtual family therapy, online support groups, 1-on-1 family coaching, and family education programs. People in recovery can also use The Family Recovery Foundation’s programs. Services are virtual. You do not need to live near an office.

Your family can participate while a loved one is still using substances, entering treatment, or preparing to return home. You can also seek support if that person will not attend. Family members need tools and clear information even when their loved one is not ready to accept care.

Your family can ask for support before your loved one enters treatment.

The Family Recovery Foundation provides ongoing help for families affected by a loved one’s substance use. Programming is nationwide, online, and free.

How registration works

Registration begins through the family programming, meetings, or Get Help pages. The Get Help form collects basic contact information and asks if you are seeking support for yourself or someone you love.

After you register, you receive a confirmation email with meeting times and links. If you would rather speak with someone, call 888-964-8825. A real person answers every day.

The online Get Help form is not HIPAA compliant. The Foundation discloses this before submission. Information is transmitted through encrypted but non-HIPAA-compliant email, so keep your submission to the requested contact details and discuss sensitive information directly with the team.

Registration does not require an insurance policy or referral for the free programs.

Weekly programs for your family

Start with Fix Your Family if you are unsure. It directly addresses communication, boundaries, and conflict, which are often the first issues families want to work on together.

Fix Your Family meets every Monday at 7:00 PM CT and 5:00 PM PT. Beth Durling, MS, CADCII, ICADC, leads this structured weekly program. The Family Room meets every Friday at 10:00 AM CT and 8:00 AM PT, with an open format that lets family members share, ask questions, and receive guidance from peer advocates. Morning Meditation meets Monday through Friday at 9:00 AM CT and 7:00 AM PT, and each guided mindfulness practice lasts 15 minutes. The Courage to Detach meets on the last Wednesday of each month at 5:00 PM CT and 3:00 PM PT, and focuses on loving someone without enabling, setting boundaries with compassion, and protecting your wellbeing.

Choose The Family Room if you need conversation and peer support. Morning Meditation fits families seeking a brief daily practice. The Courage to Detach is the clearest choice when enabling or boundary problems are driving conflict.

1-on-1 family coaching is available by appointment. The private family messaging group is available 24/7 for registered families who need guidance between live sessions.

What family education teaches

The 12-module Intensive Family Program explains substance use disorder, family patterns, communication, boundaries, and the transition home after treatment. Modules are available for download and can be used alongside weekly live sessions.

Several modules focus on codependency, manipulation, enabling, and the neuroscience behind family responses. Others address difficult conversations, connective boundaries, gaslighting, and preventing a return to use. Families can also download a Relapse Prevention Plan and a Family Support Plan.

For federal information about substance use and addiction science, visit the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Families concerned about alcohol can also use resources from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. These sources can supplement the Foundation’s family-focused curriculum.

Education gives family members a shared set of words for difficult conversations. It also helps you separate support from enabling and prepare clearer questions for counselors or treatment providers.

When a loved one needs substance use treatment

Apply for financial aid if treatment cost is blocking access. The Family Recovery Foundation offers application-based assistance for residential, outpatient, and detox programs that fit a person’s clinical needs.

Families can also request funding guidance for professional intervention services when a loved one is not ready to accept treatment. Scholarship and reduced-fee access may be available through the application process, but assistance is not guaranteed.

The Foundation provides family support and funding assistance. It does not operate residential treatment, outpatient care, or detox. For national treatment listings, use FindTreatment.gov, a federal treatment locator.

Family programming can help you prepare questions, set limits, and make a written support plan while treatment options are being considered.

Steps during an urgent safety crisis

Call 911 if someone may be in immediate danger or needs emergency medical care. The federal 911 guidance site explains when and how to contact local emergency services.

If you or someone you love is experiencing suicidal thoughts, severe emotional distress, or a substance use crisis, call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988. Trained crisis counselors are available through that national service.

The Family Recovery Foundation offers ongoing family support. It is not a crisis hotline or emergency medical provider. Once immediate safety needs are addressed, you can call 888-964-8825 to discuss continuing family programs.

Urgent danger needs an urgent response.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is virtual family therapy really free?

Yes. The virtual family therapy and live online family support programs are free, and no insurance is required. Financial aid for outside treatment or intervention services uses a separate application process.

Does my loved one need to be in treatment?

No. You can participate while your loved one is still using substances, considering treatment, receiving care, or returning home. The curriculum includes material for each of these stages.

Can I attend without my loved one?

Yes. Parents, spouses, siblings, and other loved ones can register as family members even if the person they are concerned about does not attend.

Are the programs faith-based?

The Family Recovery Foundation has a Christian faith-based orientation and provides clinical and spiritual care. If you have questions about how faith appears in a specific meeting, call 888-964-8825 before registering.

Does free virtual family therapy replace substance use treatment?

No. These programs support family members through education, therapy, coaching, and peer connection. A person living with a substance use disorder may still need assessment or treatment from an appropriate provider.

Is this the Family Recovery Center in Ohio?

No. The Family Recovery Foundation at tfrfoundation.org is a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing nationwide virtual family programming. It is not the Ohio organization called Family Recovery Center.
