What to expect in a free online family meeting

Before you join

Register free, confirm the time in your local zone, and set aside a private space. You do not need your loved one to attend. Bring a notebook if you like—sessions often cover communication scripts, boundary language, and emotional regulation tools you can use the same week.

Technology: phone, tablet, or computer with internet and a virtual meeting link from your confirmation email. Headphones improve privacy when others are home.

During and after

Facilitators welcome participants, set confidentiality expectations, and guide discussion or skills practice. You may share as much or as little as you want. Groups are free virtual family therapy and support—not crisis intervention. If you are in immediate danger, leave the session and call 911 or 988.

How free online meetings work

No session fees

Free virtual family therapy and live online support groups through The Family Recovery Foundation do not charge a per-session fee. You do not need insurance to join free programs. Optional donations support the mission but are never required to participate.

Choose a program, submit the free registration form, and receive confirmation with the virtual meeting link and any preparation notes. Sessions run live on video/online platforms—join from anywhere in the United States with a stable internet connection.

Built for families, not only the person using substances

Our free virtual family therapy is designed for spouses, parents, adult children, siblings, and close supports impacted by a loved one’s addiction and/or mental health challenges. You can participate even if your loved one is not ready for treatment.

Free online family meeting FAQs

Is free virtual family therapy really free?

Yes. Live online family therapy sessions, support groups, and many coaching pathways through TFRF are offered at no cost. No insurance is required for free programs. Donations are optional and never a condition of attendance.

What time zone are meetings in?

Most weekly sessions list Central Time (CT) as the anchor, with Pacific, Eastern, and Mountain conversions in our schedule table. Always double-check your local conversion for Daylight Saving changes. Registration confirmations include the meeting time.

How is this different from Al-Anon or paid online therapy?

Al-Anon and similar fellowships are peer-led 12-step style meetings. Paid apps and clinics offer licensed clinical therapy (often insurance or self-pay). TFRF free virtual family therapy combines facilitated live online family sessions, education modules, and optional coaching—at no cost—focused on families impacted by addiction and mental health. Who facilitates the sessions?

Sessions are led by TFRF’s experienced family recovery facilitators and peer advocates, including leadership with clinical credentials such as Beth Durling, MS, CADCII, ICADC (Executive Director). Facilitator rosters can vary by program; credentials and experience are family-recovery focused.

What technology do I need?

A phone, tablet, or computer with internet, a private space to speak, and the ability to join a video/online meeting link. Headphones help with privacy. If you have access barriers, contact us at 888-964-8825 and we will try to help.

Is what I share private?

We ask all participants to respect confidentiality: what is shared in group stays in group. Facilitators follow professional and organizational privacy practices. Sessions are not a substitute for privileged clinical care in every jurisdiction—see our Privacy Policy for how TFRF handles personal data from forms and registrations.

Can I join if my loved one is still using or refuses treatment?

Yes. Free virtual family therapy is for you as a family member. You do not need your loved one’s permission or participation to register and attend.
