Families cover missed rent, call employers with excuses, or reverse a boundary after one hard conversation. That pattern has a name. The Courage to Detach workshop free session meets on the last Wednesday of every month at 5:00 PM CT / 3:00 PM PT. This virtual nationwide intensive from The Family Recovery Foundation focuses on loving a family member without enabling, setting compassionate boundaries, and protecting your own wellbeing.

Many families reach this session after help has turned into repeated rescue. You may be covering missed obligations, making excuses, or changing a boundary under pressure. The workshop gives you a set time to examine that pattern with an experienced facilitator and decide what you will control next.

What happens during the monthly workshop?

The live session stays focused on healthy detachment, boundaries, and the difference between support and enabling. The Courage to Detach meets online on the last Wednesday of each month at 5:00 PM CT / 3:00 PM PT. Experienced facilitators and certified counselors lead the live sessions.

Healthy detachment separates your decisions from another person's choices. You can care about a family member with a substance use disorder while declining to cover expenses, hide consequences, or make treatment decisions for them. Your support becomes clearer because you decide what you will and will not take responsibility for.

One meeting will not settle every family pattern. It can give you a defined place to name one enabling behavior, examine the pressure behind it, and choose a boundary you can carry into the next month.

Before the workshop, write down one recent situation where helping left you responsible for another person's choices. Bring the facts, what you did next, and what happened afterward.

How can you tell when help has become enabling?

Enabling may be part of the pattern when your actions repeatedly shield another person from the immediate results of choices connected to substance use or a mental health concern. Examples include calling an employer with an excuse, paying the same unpaid expense again, or hiding what happened from other family members.

Context matters. Paying a bill during a medical emergency may support safety. Repeatedly covering expenses caused by substance use while concealing the reason may keep the same responsibility on you. Review what happened after your help. Note whether it supported treatment, safety, or an agreed plan. Then note whether it hid the pattern.

Care can have limits.

Our Intensive Family Program gives you added education between live sessions. Modules 3 through 5 address codependency, manipulation, enabling, and neuroscience. Modules 6 through 8 cover difficult conversations, boundaries, and connective boundary language.

For step-by-step boundary language, use our How to Detach With Love article. The monthly workshop gives you live time to apply those ideas to your family pattern.

You can also review SAMHSA’s guidance for families and the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s explanation of addiction and the brain before the session. These resources can help you separate the health condition from the choices you make in response.

Why pair a monthly intensive with weekly family support?

The monthly intensive gives one family pattern sustained attention. Weekly programs give you places to revisit your boundaries and communication. The Courage to Detach workshop is the better entry point when enabling is the main concern. Fix Your Family fits broader communication, conflict, and trust problems.

Morning MeditationMonday through Friday at 9:00 AM CT / 7:00 AM PTA 15-minute guided mindfulness practice

Use the monthly workshop to identify one detachment issue. Bring related communication problems to Fix Your Family. The Family Room gives you an open format for questions. Morning Meditation offers a short pause before you respond to pressure at home.

If your situation needs private attention, 1-on-1 family coaching is available by appointment. Registered families can also use a private messaging group with our Clinical Director and trained peer support team 24 hours a day.

What should you do before and after the workshop?

Bring one recent interaction, what you did, what followed, and what you want to change. A specific event is more useful than a broad statement such as saying that the family member never listens or always breaks promises.

Describe what happened without labels or guesses about the other person's motives. Separate the action you took from the action your family member took. Name any responsibility or consequence you absorbed for them. Then write one boundary based on an action you can control.

After the session, put the boundary in plain language. A boundary names what you will do under defined conditions. It does not require another person to agree before you follow it.

The downloadable Family Support Plan can help you record your next action. Families concerned about a return to substance use can also use the Relapse Prevention Plan worksheet. Both are part of our on-demand family education resources.

Your loved one's choices remain theirs. Your follow-through remains yours.
