The Family Recovery Foundation offers free virtual family therapy and live online family support nationwide, with no insurance required. Families searching for how to help a loved one with addiction free can begin with family support, a clear safety plan, and an application for treatment financial aid.
How to help a loved one with addiction free today
Start by separating an emergency from an ongoing treatment need. If your loved one is unresponsive, has severe trouble breathing, may have overdosed, or presents an immediate danger, call 911. For suicidal thoughts or a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
The Family Recovery Foundation provides ongoing family care. Residential treatment, detox, and emergency response are not services we provide. Use 911 or 988 when someone needs immediate crisis help.
For a nonemergency, prepare before you discuss treatment. Facts work better than labels. Write down what you have seen, including missed responsibilities, unsafe behavior, health changes, or money problems. Use dates when you know them.
Pick a calm time when your loved one is not currently using substances or highly distressed. Describe two or three specific events without diagnosing, blaming, or arguing about intent. Have one next step ready, such as joining a free family session, calling 888-964-8825 together, or requesting a treatment assessment. Decide what practical help you can offer and which expenses or consequences you will no longer cover.
Practical help can mean sitting beside your loved one during a phone call, providing transportation to an assessment, caring for a child during an appointment, or organizing treatment information. You can offer those things without handing over cash or paying debts tied to substance use.
Which family services can you use for free?
Your family can register for free virtual family therapy, live online support groups, family education, and coaching through The Family Recovery Foundation. Programs run nationwide. Insurance is not required.
Fix Your Family meets every Monday at 7:00 PM CT and 5:00 PM PT. This structured session covers communication, boundaries, conflict, and rebuilding trust. The Family Room meets Fridays at 10:00 AM CT and 8:00 AM PT in an open group format where families share experiences and ask questions.
Morning Meditation is a 15-minute guided practice offered Monday through Friday at 9:00 AM CT and 7:00 AM PT. The Courage to Detach meets on the last Wednesday of each month at 5:00 PM CT and 3:00 PM PT. It focuses on loving someone without enabling substance use and protecting your own wellbeing.
You can also request 1-on-1 family coaching by appointment. A certified counselor works with you on a plan for your family’s situation. On-demand education includes 12 modules covering addiction, codependency, difficult conversations, boundaries, gaslighting, and a loved one’s return home from treatment.
The Family Recovery Foundation is clinically facilitated and has a Christian faith-based orientation. We are a separate organization from the Ohio Family Recovery Center.
You don’t have to wait for your loved one to accept treatment before your family receives support.
How can you seek financial aid for treatment?
Apply through The Family Recovery Foundation’s financial aid pathway if residential treatment, outpatient care, detox, or professional intervention is financially out of reach. Assistance is application-based. Approval depends on the family’s situation and clinical needs.
Free family programming and treatment funding are separate paths. You do not need insurance for our virtual family programs. Treatment financial aid may involve direct assistance, a scholarship, reduced-fee access, or funding guidance for intervention services.
The Family Recovery Foundation runs an established financial aid process for families who cannot cover treatment costs on their own. An application does not guarantee approval, but a real review process exists for families who need it.
Use the financial aid page or the free virtual family therapy hub to submit a request. You can also call 888-964-8825. A real person answers every day and can explain which request fits your family.
The Get Help form states that it is not HIPAA compliant. Read the disclosure before submitting and provide only the information the form requests.
You can search for other treatment options through the federal FindTreatment.gov directory. Ask each provider to explain the expected cost in writing, what financial assistance would cover, and what your family would still owe before admission.
Apply before ruling it out.
How should you talk with your loved one about treatment?
Use specific observations and make one concrete offer. A short conversation is usually easier to keep focused than a long review of every painful event connected to substance use.
I love you, and I’m concerned. I’ve seen you miss work twice and drive after using substances. I found a treatment assessment we can call about together. I’m available to sit with you while we make the call.
Describe what happened instead of debating labels. Your job is to state your concern, explain the effect on the family, offer one option, and protect safety. NIDA’s treatment and recovery overview provides federal information about substance use disorder and treatment.
Set boundaries around actions you control. You might stop providing cash, refuse to lie to an employer, prohibit substance use in your home, or offer transportation only for treatment and health appointments. Choose limits you can keep. Repeated threats you cannot follow weaken your position.
If the conversation could become unsafe, do not hold it alone. A 1-on-1 family coaching appointment can help you plan what to say, where to meet, and which treatment or intervention option to present.
What if your loved one refuses treatment?
Keep using family care even if your loved one declines treatment. Your access to free virtual family therapy, support groups, education, and coaching does not depend on their participation.
Fix Your Family can help you prepare boundaries and difficult conversations. The Courage to Detach focuses on caring about the person without taking responsibility for choices you cannot control. These sessions give you a place to review what happened and decide what you will do next.
You can keep treatment information ready without repeating the same argument every day. Update it if circumstances change, including after a return to substance use, a medical emergency, job loss, or a request for care. Offer the clearest available option at that point.
Registered families may also use the private family messaging group, which provides 24/7 access to The Family Recovery Foundation’s Clinical Director and trained peer support team. That group provides ongoing guidance. Emergency needs still belong with 911 or 988.
Your family can act now.
What People Want to Know
Is free family therapy the same as free rehab?
No. The Family Recovery Foundation’s virtual family therapy and online support programs are free, while funding for residential treatment, outpatient care, or detox requires a separate financial aid application.
Do I need insurance for free virtual family therapy?
No insurance is required. Families nationwide can register for free virtual family therapy and online support through The Family Recovery Foundation.
Can I join if my loved one refuses treatment?
Yes. Family programs are available while a loved one is using substances, considering treatment, receiving care, or returning home from a program.
Can financial aid cover detox or an intervention?
The application may support detox, residential or outpatient treatment, and professional intervention services. Approval and the amount of support depend on the application review.
Is the Get Help form HIPAA compliant?
No. The form discloses that it is not HIPAA compliant before submission, so read the notice and provide only the requested information.
What should I do during an immediate crisis?
Call 911 for immediate danger, suspected overdose, severe breathing trouble, or unresponsiveness. Call or text 988 for suicidal thoughts or a mental health or substance use crisis.
